Great Style Runs in the Family

Great style runs in the family.

My style has heavily been influenced by my mother.  She is a class act.  I remember in middle school desperately wanting to wear these Limited Too sweats and she let me buy them but highly discouraged me from wearing them to school saying, “it takes just as much time to put on sweats as it does a nice top and jeans.”  That always stayed with me.  In college, I was always the most dressed up person in the room and I remember during an internship at a TV production company where everyone wore sneakers, jeans and white tees to work, I would come in with a dress or a blazer every day.  “Dress for where you want to be, not where you are,” was another classic statement by both my parents.  My grandmother is 89 years old and refuses to leave the bedroom without earrings and at least 5 necklaces.  My sister won Best Dressed in high school and now works for Celiné, need I say more?!

When I moved to Los Angeles I was working as a personal stylist at Nordstrom.  I ran an incredible business shopping for both men and women and doubling as a dressing room therapist.  Across the country from my family, missing them daily, I was lucky enough to make friends that have turned into family.  Lauren, was my boss at Nordstrom.  She helped me grow my personal styling business and became my go-to person to go shopping with and turn to for any style advice.

Something we always emphasized with each other, and our clients, is that the foundation for effortless style starts by investing in classic pieces you can wear over and over again.  A great blazer, a crisp white button down, figure-flattering jeans, and a great pair of comfortable shoes are some of the classic pieces that every woman needs in their wardrobe.  Lauren taught me how to ask the right questions to get to know my clients better and help them build their wardrobe.

Lauren and I often shop together and end up loving the same pieces but style them in completely different ways.  That’s a message we both share with each other and without clients, when styling pieces, even the most classic ones, you can still make pieces unique, by added touches of your own personal style.

fall 2018 trends: classics

For instance, my go-to classic is a blazer.

I find the blazer to be an essential piece in my wardrobe.  I always feel instantly elevated and put together whenever I add a blazer to my look.  I find a blazer demands respect and adds a polished flair to every look, even when I am styling it with jeans, a t-shirt, and sneakers.  I also love to add layers under a blazer when fall hits.  Layering button downs under sweaters under the blazer is my fall gets me ready for leaves changing, apple pie and cooler weather.

Lauren’s go-to classic is a white button down.

“A crisp white button-down is the perfect shirt to add to your wardrobe.  It’s classic and can be easily dressed down, untucked with jeans or dressed up for the office.  I often wear a white button down with everything!  I especially love it under this red trench because it’s a pop of sophistication.”
