Men’s Dress Shirt Fit Guide

When shopping for a Men’s Dress Shirt there are 5 tips you should follow to make sure your dress shirt fits properly.

1st step: There should only be 1 finger width of space between your neck and your collar.  Any wider than that it’s too large and there will be an obvious amount of empty space showing.  Any smaller than that, well, goodbye, see you later, your circulation was just cut off.

2nd step: The seam of your shirt should ALWAYS start right where your shoulder begins to slope.  If the seam extends past your shoulder, the shirt is too big.  If it’s any closer to your neck, the shirt is definitely too small.

3rd step: You know your sleeve length is the right size when the cuff lays right where your wrist bends.  Dress shirts typically run in 3 different sleeve sizes, 32/33 which is regular, 34/35 which is long and 36/37 which is extra long.  The sleeve length matters people!  You don’t want your sleeve to be too long because it will cause unnecessary bunching and if it’s too short you will never get that charming pop of sleeve beneath your sportcoat look.

4th step: It’s 2016, let’s please stop with the baggy dress shirts.  Now, most of you already are wearing slimmer fitting shirts but in case you still aren’t shirt if your shirt fits properly, do the pinch test.  If you can pinch more than 1″ of fabric on both sides of your waist, your shirt is too big.  If can’t move your shoulders in fear your chest buttons will pop open, your shirt is too small.  Tailoring is key.

5th step: Never untuck your dress shirt.  Dress shirts are made longer so they can stay tucked into your pants.  Untucking a dress shirt always looks sloppy.  Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy.  Every single time.

My favorite slim fitting dress shirts include the brands:

Calibrate, Hugo Boss, Banana Republic, J.Crew
